Countdown to Summer Mountain Biking season at Fernie Alpine Resort bike park

TGIM
(Thanks Goodness It’s May)

Hooray for May. Toes of stubborn snow make slow retreats into the last shady alcoves on the lower mountain; clearing way for tender green grass to weave through persistent thatch, straining to reach warm breezes. Wildlife wakes from long winter slumbers and lazes about on ski runs to let the spring sun warm their wintered bones. Rivers run high and fast. In town, eager hearts beat to supply pasty-white legs toeing the starting line in anticipation of first rides. Winter is fast departing the Elk Valley and will soon make way for another Legendary Summer at Fernie Alpine Resort.

Opening day for Fernie Alpine Resort 2013 Summer Operations is scheduled for June 29th with a tentative preview weekend on the books for June 22 & 23rd. The Elk Chair will be open seven days a week from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm with the exception of Thursdays where the lift will spin until 7PM for our famous SCOTT Thursday Night Race Series, presented by Kelsey’s. The Timber Chair will be open weekends from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm. And of course, in addition to Legendary Biking, Fernie will be offering Aerial Park and Zip Line adventures, scenic chairlift rides, alpine dining, and lift accessed hiking through our five alpine bowls and old growth forests.

So what’s new this year? Last fall, our crew focused on a massive technical terrain feature rebuild program. Ewok received an overhaul and may now, perhaps, have the longest continuous wood bridge feature around. Don’t be shy; it’s designed for intermediate riders with a flowing series of wide wood berms, rollers, and varying line options no higher than three feet off the ground. The same agenda has carried through to Aggravated Assault, Alternate Flight Pattern, Deer Trail, and Playground where we have renovated a few of the older features and have started to construct new TTF’s just to spice things up. As usual, our hand crews will be working on all your other favorite rides to clear winter damage and buff out berms and bombholes.

Fernie Alpine Resort is proud to announce that we are hosting the Cycling BC sanctioned Dunbar Cycles Summer Series DH BC Cup Finals August 30 – Sept 1, 2013. For more event information check out the series Fernie BC Cup facebook or visit Fernie Alpine Resort. As a result, we will be making a push to get Canada Cup DH and other Timber side trails open earlier for our guests this summer. This means the Bike Crew will be getting hand teams and machinery, including a brand new Bike Park mini hoe, up on the “dark side” early this spring for snow removal and to start prepping the racecourse.

“We are relaxed, reloaded, and recharged. We are ready to tackle the work we were born to do. Ready to create something remarkable. This is not a time to be back at the grindstone. These are the days to be back at our passion. Breathing life into new projects. We are conduits of innovation, imagination and inspiration. It’s [May]. And we can’t wait to get started.” #makeithappen

See you in a few short weeks,
Your Fernie Alpine Resort Bike Crew
