I am already thinking of winter and looking forward to ski season but one of my favorite things to do before ski season begins is to go on long Fall hikes. My top pick and one of the best hikes in the Canadian Rockies is the Mountain Lakes Trail, or as locals call it, Heiko’s Trail, near Fernie, British Columbia.

The Mountain Lakes Trail, is a classic hike and it will give you even a greater appreciation for Heiko and the team of volunteers who have dedicated their time and hard-work to restoring this trail in the last 10 years. Why classic? maybe an Epic…but it has so much to experience, from a hiking perspective you will climb ladders, cross bridges, and see an array of interesting and entertaining signs to just name a few of the reasons but it is the incredible alpine beauty that will keep you coming back! But don’t miss the waterfall that appears out of no-where, or the limestone cave that seems to go on forever….

Come prepared for an epic as it is 25km one way from Hartley Lake access to Island Lake Lodge and make sure you bring extra water, food, and clothing.

Once you have experienced ‘Heiko’s Trail’ you will be hooked on hiking this Canadian Rockies trail wonder, year after year.
