Have you ever wondered what your favourite winter paradise looks like in the summer? While the name “The Powder Highway” holds true during the colder months, it’s just as enticing come summer. The stunning roadway, now vibrant in color links summer destinations together with ease, each holding it’s own unique treasure, yours for the taking.
Whether you seek a summer filled with adventure, action sports, relaxation or artisan appreciation you’ll find a plethora of whatever it is you’re looking for on The Powder Highway. It would take multiple summers to see it all, so we’ve narrowed it down to a few musts for an exceptionally well-rounded journey this summer.
VIA FERRATA, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort – Golden BC
Undoubtedly the most memorable Via Ferrata in Canada, your experience at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is guaranteed to be surreally wild. Your harness and guide will keep your mind and ease but the thrill of the terrain will surely make your toes curl with excitement. No climbing experience is required for this adventure, but you’ll leave feeling ready to conquer Everest. Celebrate your summit of Terminator Ridge with a well-earned après on highest patio in Canada at KHMR’s Eagle’s Eye Restaurant. Bonus, as you take the gondola to and from the Via Ferrata you’ll pass over Boo the Grizzle Bears habitat and hopefully get a glimpse of him on the move.
HIKING – Kimberley BC
Where the trails are quite and plentiful – now that’s a good place to be! Kimberley BC is the perfect hub for all of your summer hiking adventures. In town you’ll find great half and full day hikes in the Kimberley Nature Park. An extensive trail network links the town to its neighbouring towns of Cranbrook and Marysville BC. For the alpine lovers Top of the World Provincial Park cannot be missed. This trail system offers glimmering alpine lakes, scrambles, campsites and breath taking views. Heli hiking starts right from the Kimberley Alpine Resort parking lot, plan your heli-hiking excursion with Boulder Hut Adventures!
MOUNTAIN BIKING, Fernie Alpine Resort – Fernie BC
First timers or seasoned bikers alike will find happiness on the trails at Fernie Alpine Resort. An impressive rental fleet of bikes will cater to all ages and abilities prior to your trails. As if it isn’t an experience enough on it’s own to explore a resort you normally ski in the summer, but now you have the opportunity to bike down it! Have no fear, if down hill isn’t calling your name there are plenty of options for cross-country biking and even town cruising in Fernie BC.
HOT SPRINGS – Radium, Fairmont and Whiteswan Provincial Park BC
Seeking a summer of restoration and relaxation in the mountains? Or have tired legs seeking refuge after a big outing? The hot springs along the powder highway will impress all intentions. Radium Hot Springs just south of Golden BC are the furthest north and have a unique mountainside location with freshly renovated hot pools. Fairmont Hot Springs infrastructure not only has well maintained hot springs, but a swimming pool with a diving board to boot that kids and inner-kids alike will love on a hot summers day. If you prefer to keep it on the wilder side, camp at Whiteswan Provincial Park and stroll to the nearby natural hot springs by the name of Lussier. Please remember this is a sacred place and park so please be respectful to all including Mother Nature by packing out what you pack in.
CRAFT BEER – Golden, Kimberley and Fernie BC
The Powder Highway could be called the Craft Brewery Highway – there are so many note worthy stops on this route. We can’t possibly list them all, but we can name drop our favourites! Overtime in Kimberley BC is a unique tasting room with tasty beverages. The new kid on the block, Whitetooth Brewing in Golden BC is already making a name across the province and for a good reason! Keep it classic with the well-known Fernie Brewing Co and you simply cannot go wrong. Enhance your visit with a pre arranged brewery tour.
Adventure rich the Powder Highway is a destination that craves to be explored in all seasons. We’ll never tire of this place and it’s offers – there’s still so much to explore!
