Soon we will be hitting the slopes but while the kids head back to school, late summer is the best time to hit the trail in the Canadian Rockies. Experience the Canadian Rockies the way they’re meant to be- on foot.

Top 5 Fall don’t miss hikes in the Canadian Rockies

Iceline Trail, Yoho National Park

Get up close and personal with numerous glaciers, expand your view of one of Canada’s highest waterfalls, Takakkaw Falls, and if that was not enough fill your eyes with spectacular peaks in every direction for your viewing pleasure.

 

Banff National Park

Larch Valley and Sentinel Pass

Larch trees become the star of the show here as they turn a vivid yellow and gold and it is a must see sight. You will not be alone for this matinee so get their early and check Parks Canada trail updates for mandatory hiking party size restrictions due to bear activity in the area.

Fernie, British Columbia

New this summer is extended September weekend operations at Fernie Alpine Resort so take the Timber Express Quad up to hike various trail options but best for the more the more adventurous and experienced hikers is the hike to Polar Peak starting from the trail to Lost Boys Lookout.

360 degree panorama views of peaks, into Montana and across to Alberta, greet you as you take off to the right at the pass, following a faint trail and color marks across the Lizard Range Headwall to Polar Peak. Please check into Guest Services for trail updates and information. Start early with first chair up to give yourself enough time to return to lift for downloading. Note their is a short section of this route where there is a feeling of exposure so make sure you are an experienced hiker/scrambler before taking on this trail.

Golden, British Columbia

Gorman Lake is a beautiful alpine gem nestled by knife edge peaks on both sides. It is a short 3.5 km hike that is perfect for families but make sure and check into the condition of the forestry road before you embark on your adventure here.

Bear Spray, a must and know how to use it.

Hiking boots, make sure they properly fit, by not just trying them on but walking around the store. Get higher cut version for rougher trails ans scrambling and low cut trail running style will work just fine for more manicured trails.
