The Mountain Lakes Trail near Fernie, British Columbia, is one of the most scenic hiking trails in the Canadian Rockies. The trail is also known as ‘Heiko’s Trail’ in honor of the local mountain legend, who spent years hand building sections of trail and creating unique wooden features, trolls, steps and bridges.
Mother Nature works her magic. Combine the artistic work of Heiko and team with Mother Nature’s handiwork, from limestone caverns, waterfalls, flower filled alpine meadows, and class Canadian Rockies mountain eye candy and you have one of my favorite hikes in the Canadian Rockies.
Running race-really? Yep. Once a year this incredible trail hosts one incredible race- called ‘Heiko’s Hellish Half Marathon’ and it is fitting. Combined with that amazing scenery you have a got a bit of work on your hands as you climb up from the valley trailhead off the Hartley Lake road and navigate your way up a headwall, through a spectacular meadow and over a high pass and more meadows until you reach a steep decline, down to Island Lake Lodge.
Over 25km of fun. The hike is just over 20km but for the Heiko’s Half Marathon you will enjoy 25km! Don’t forget to take some time to enjoy the views from the lofty Three Sisters Pass, where you will peer down towards the town of Fernie, British Columbia and up towards the mighty peaks of the Three Sisters.
