Spring Adventures abound in the Canadian Rockies perfect place to hike, bike, boat and ski tour
Set yourself adrift in the Rockies for starters….Mountain towns abound but check out these three British Columbia adventure towns, Fernie, Golden and Kimberley. Each offers the magic mix of river, mountains and trails.
A Rockies multi-sport sampler to wet your appetite…we quickly found that we needed more space on our roof-rack as we loaded mountain bikes, skis and a canoe and headed out of town.
Start with river of Golden dreams….Starting with a canoe on the Columbia River amidst one of natures great shows ‘Wings over the wetlands’ , paddling through one of the largest wetlands in North America is a spectacle not to be missed. Not just for bird-watchers as this migratory bird route comes alive in Spring to the delight of all nature lovers.
Nature continues to amaze, getting in hot water and running with the Elk…..we headed south enjoying the soothing benefits of natures hot water at Lussier Hot Springs and witnessing the myriad of Elk gathering in the food trough of the Rocky Mountain trench near Skookumchuk. But don’t go to pristine Lussier Hot Springs on weekend nights as it can get over-run by local party goers on booze-filled soaks.
Ready for a glide & stride? Why not! We entered the quaint alpine village of Kimberley ready for an afternoon hike in the Kimberley Nature Park, one of the largest community parks in the West. A myriad of trails abound and it turned out to be the perfect warm up prior to the next days epic fitness test. Many are un-aware of the mountain ranges of exploration that abounds surrounding Kimberley. We set out early morning seeking perfect corn snow slopes for a ski tour and descent of one of the higher peaks in the St Mary’s Alpine Park buried deep in the Purcell Mountains and part of a natural gem of an area called the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy.
Ready for high gear? Hitting high gear and full on adventure fun abounds in Fernie. The natural place to go in the Canadian Rockies for all things adventure and this time did not disappoint. Fernie has the largest network of mountain biking trails in the Canadian Rockies and offers trails for all abilities from hard-core to granny gear.
Enjoy your Spring-time adventure in the Canadian Rockies!
